Apps

Kōrerorero
Kōrerorero is a free app from AUT. It's one of my favourite apps at the moment as it has useful, conversational, everyday reo Māori with high quality audio of the conversations and good practice exercises.

Rongo
Rongo is a great app for improving your pronunciation. You listen to kupu and then repeat the words to check for correct pronunciation. It would be even better if it could pinpoint where your pronunciation is wrong, but overall, it's a low stress way to practice and improve your pronunciation without feeling whakamā.

Te Aka Māori Dictionary
Widely regarded as the go-to dictionary for reo Māori (but PaeKupu is also very good!). The app costs a few bucks though, so if money is tight you can just create a link to the website on your phone's home page.

Ako Tahi
Ako Tahi is another free app based on the Ngāpuhi dialect. It's more of a phrasebook than a learning app. Although Ngāpuhi is Aotearoa's biggest iwi, I struggle a bit with some of the dialectic differences. For example, they strictly use "E ... ana" with no "Kei te ..." and there's a lot of "w" words where I'm expecting "wh".
⚠️ A word of caution
Drops may look like a tempting option for learning te reo Māori, but it has frequent errors (hapa) — including incorrect grammar and unnatural syllable breaks. For beginners, this can create confusion and make learning harder than it needs to be. If you're just starting out, you're better off with resources that reflect the language more accurately.
