Days = Ngā Rā: Matching

These weekday names were created by the Māori Language Commission in its drive to reduce the number of loan words used in Te Reo. However, many academics make the argument that a 7-day week was never a part of traditional culture, and that the use of atua (gods) in this artificial context is disrespectful. For that reason, many prefer to revert to the loan word versions, but it is a personal preference.

To ask what day it is today, 'Ko te aha tēnei rā?'. To which you can answer with just the day name, 'Rātū', or 'Ko te Rātū tēnei rā'.
